Rocío Márquez
His restless personality and enormous curiosity are evident in his discography, which in a transversal way shows us such a great love for the flamenco tradition and an imperative need to expand the limits of that same tradition, exploring and experimenting with melodies, instrumentation, arrangements and lyrics. Thus, from that fresh direct from “Here and Now” (2009), his records are the chronicle of a take off. “Claridad” (2012), “El Niño” (2014), “Firmamento” (2017) and “Seen in El Jueves” (2019) – plus the collaboration with Fahmi Alqhai, “Dialogues of old and new sounds” (2018 ) – they show us an artist in continuous search for herself through music.
In this search, fraught with risks, he has gained the complicity of criticism that the Giraldillo has granted him for Innovation at the Seville Biennial and the Coups de Coeur award from the Charles Cros Academy (France). It has also found the support of the public, gathering for example more than 2,000 people in a concert held last year in Madrid. But perhaps the most significant thing about this search is that along the way Rocío has found her own artistic identity. For this reason, to understand his complex dimension as an artist, it is necessary to attend to the multifaceted nature of his career, to look at it from different perspectives. Whether conquering the great temples of music (Royal Theater, National Auditorium, Palau de la Música, L’Olympia or the Paris Philharmonic), defending his heterodox flamenco at the European Film Awards, Primavera Sound or Monkey Week, or developing his most performative proposals at Matadero and the CCCB.
That same creative restlessness has led her to share the stage with Jorge Drexler, with whom she premiered ‘Aquellos Puentes Sutiles’ in 2018, Rosa Torres Pardo, Arcángel, Carmen Linares or José Manuel Zapata, in the same way that she records with The New Raemon, Christina Rosenvinge, Kiko Veneno, Albert Plá, Dani de Morón, Diego Carrasco or Refree.
Beyond her artistic side, Rocío Márquez is a Doctor cum laude from the University of Seville with her thesis on “Vocal Technique in Flamenco”, she is a teacher in the Interuniversity Master in Research and Analysis of Flamenco and a lecturer on the flamenco voice.
